ball-up

Make a mess

A ball-up is a mess or blunder—something that's gone badly wrong.

British and Australian in flavor, it's the noun form of the verb phrase ball up, meaning to bungle: The whole project was a ball-up from the start.

In Australian rules football, a ball-up is when the umpire bounces the ball to restart play after a stoppage.
