True Cross

Calvary's sacred timber

The True Cross is the actual wooden cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, according to Christian tradition.

Saint Helena, mother of Constantine, reportedly discovered it in Jerusalem around 326 AD.

Fragments claimed as relics of the True Cross spread throughout medieval Christendom, housed in churches and venerated by pilgrims.

The term now sometimes appears skeptically, since the accumulated "pieces" would far exceed any single cross.
