Apprentice

Novice under master

An apprentice is someone learning a trade or skill under the guidance of an experienced practitioner.

Historically, apprenticeships were formal arrangements where young people worked for masters in exchange for training: He apprenticed to a blacksmith at fourteen.

The term extends to any novice learning through hands-on experience: She's still an apprentice at navigating office politics.

To apprentice is to place or serve in such training.
