haram

Against Islamic law

Haram is an Arabic term meaning forbidden or sinful under Islamic law, the opposite of halal (permitted).

Pork, alcohol, and gambling are haram.

The word has spread beyond religious contexts: Pineapple on pizza is haram.

In this looser usage, haram labels anything considered unacceptable or a violation of norms, often humorously.
