liberation movement
Organized emancipation effort
A liberation movement is an organized effort to free a people from oppression—colonial rule, foreign occupation, or systemic discrimination.
The term emerged prominently in mid-20th-century anticolonial struggles and later extended to campaigns for civil rights and social equality: the women's liberation movement, gay liberation.
Liberation movements may pursue change through political action, armed resistance, or both.
