A Christmas Carol

Victorian holiday ghost-story

A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens, published in 1843, about the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by ghosts on Christmas Eve and transformed into a generous man.

The story has become so culturally embedded that its characters and phrases have entered common usage: a Scrooge is any miserly person, and Bah, humbug! expresses cynical dismissal of sentiment or celebration.

The phrase "a Christmas carol" in lowercase simply refers to any song sung during the Christmas season.
