Ebenezer Scrooge
Ebenezer Scrooge is the miserly protagonist of Charles Dickens's *A Christmas Carol* (1843), a cold-hearted old man who hoards wealth and despises Christmas until supernatural visitors reform him.
His name has become shorthand for anyone stingy or mean-spirited: Don't be such a Scrooge—it's just a few dollars for charity.
