yabby

Australian freshwater crayfish

A yabby is a small freshwater crayfish native to Australia, found in rivers, streams, and farm dams.

Yabbies are caught recreationally and commercially, often used as bait or eaten: We spent the afternoon yabbying at the creek.

The word comes from Wemba Wemba, an Aboriginal language of Victoria.

Also spelled yabbie.
