spiny lobster

Tropical reef dweller

A spiny lobster is a large marine crustacean lacking the heavy front claws of true lobsters, instead bearing long, spiny antennae and a shell covered with forward-pointing spines.

Found in warm waters worldwide, they're commercially important seafood, often sold as "lobster tail": We ordered the grilled spiny lobster.

Also called rock lobster or crayfish in some regions.
