American lobster

Atlantic claw bearer

American lobster is a large crustacean native to the Atlantic coast of North America, from Labrador to North Carolina.

It has large front claws—one for crushing, one for cutting—and is prized as seafood.

Most commercially harvested lobsters come from Maine and the Canadian Maritimes: We ordered American lobster at the restaurant.

Distinguished from spiny lobsters, which lack the characteristic claws.
