worlding

Creating immersive universes

Worlding is the act of constructing or inhabiting a world—building the coherent reality of a fictional setting, or more philosophically, the ongoing process by which experience shapes itself into a meaningful whole.

In creative contexts, worlding describes the craft of making imagined places feel lived-in: The novel's worlding is meticulous, down to regional dialects and trade routes.

In phenomenology and speculative thought, it names how beings actively participate in generating the worlds they occupy.
