bale

Barn-stored bundle

A bale is a large bundle of material—hay, cotton, wool, paper—compressed and bound for storage or transport.

The verb bale means to form such bundles: We spent the afternoon baling hay.

In a different sense, to bale (or bail) out means to remove water from a boat or to escape from an aircraft by parachute.

A bale can also be great suffering or sorrow, though this literary usage is rare outside poetry.
