wicker man

Braided ritual figure

A wicker man is a large human-shaped figure made of woven branches, associated with ancient Celtic rituals in which effigies were allegedly burned as sacrifices.

The term gained modern currency through the 1973 British horror film of that name.

Contemporary pagans sometimes burn wicker figures at festivals, though without the human sacrifice.
