cigar store Indian

Wooden shop figure

A cigar store Indian is a wooden statue of a Native American, traditionally placed outside tobacco shops as advertising.

These figures, usually life-sized and holding tobacco leaves or cigars, were common from the 17th through early 20th centuries.

The term now often describes someone standing motionless and expressionless: He just stood there like a cigar store Indian.
