maypole dance
Spring ribbon ritual
A maypole dance is a folk dance performed around a tall wooden pole, typically on May Day.
Dancers hold ribbons attached to the top of the pole and weave around each other, braiding the ribbons into colorful patterns as they circle.
The tradition survives in school celebrations and Renaissance fairs: The children practiced their maypole dance for weeks.
