found footage horror
Recovered tape terror
Found footage horror is a film subgenre that presents its story as discovered recordings—typically from handheld cameras, security footage, or webcams.
The conceit is that what you're watching is real documentation of terrifying events, often ending with the apparent death or disappearance of whoever was filming.
The Blair Witch Project popularized the style, spawning countless imitators.
The shaky cameras and amateur quality serve the illusion of authenticity, though the format has become familiar enough that audiences now recognize its conventions.
