wintering grounds
Cold-season animal habitat
Wintering grounds are areas where migratory animals spend the cold months, typically offering milder weather and better food availability than their breeding territories: Monarch butterflies travel thousands of miles to reach their wintering grounds in Mexico.
The term applies especially to birds but extends to other migrating species.
Also called wintering areas or winter range.
