mountain gorilla

Endangered highland ape

Mountain gorillas are a subspecies of eastern gorilla found only in the volcanic mountains of central Africa, primarily in Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

They are larger and have thicker fur than lowland gorillas, adaptations to their high-altitude forest habitat.

Critically endangered, their population numbers only around a thousand individuals: We trekked for hours to observe mountain gorillas in the wild.
