whaleship

Leviathan hunting vessel

A whaleship is a vessel designed and equipped for hunting whales.

These ships dominated certain maritime economies in the 18th and 19th centuries, carrying crews on voyages that could last years: The whaleship had been at sea for three years when it finally returned to port.

The term is largely historical, as commercial whaling has mostly ceased.
