way out

Door marked green

Way out is an exit or means of escape: We found a way out through the back.

Figuratively, it's any solution to a difficult situation: Bankruptcy seemed like the only way out.

As an adjective (often hyphenated), way-out means unconventional or avant-garde: way-out jazz, way-out ideas.

This sense peaked in mid-twentieth-century slang but still appears.
