yard lines
Football field stripes
Yard lines are the horizontal markings on an American or Canadian football field that indicate distance, running parallel across the field at five-yard intervals.
They're numbered from each goal line to the fifty-yard line at midfield: They started the drive on their own twenty-yard line.
The lines help players, officials, and spectators track field position and measure gains or losses.
