walkie-talkies
Portable radio pair
Walkie-talkies are portable two-way radios that allow users to communicate over short distances by pushing a button to talk and releasing to listen.
The term evokes the device's novelty when invented—a radio you could walk with and talk into: The kids played with walkie-talkies in the backyard.
Now largely replaced by cell phones for most purposes, they remain useful where cellular networks are unavailable or unreliable.
