recon

Short surveillance mission

Recon is military slang for reconnaissance—the act of surveying an area to gather information, especially about enemy positions or terrain.

The word has spread to civilian use for any preliminary investigation: Let me do some recon before we commit to that restaurant.

As a verb, to recon is to scout or scope out: I'll recon the venue before the event.
