venereal disease
Sexually contracted illness
Venereal disease is an infection transmitted through sexual contact—syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and others.
The term dominated medical and public health discourse through most of the twentieth century but has largely been replaced by STD (sexually transmitted disease) or STI (sexually transmitted infection), which are considered less stigmatizing.
He was treated for venereal disease during the war.
