battle fatigue
Soldier's mental strain
Battle fatigue is a dated term for the psychological trauma that soldiers experience during or after combat, now more commonly called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The condition involves symptoms like anxiety, nightmares, emotional numbness, and difficulty functioning normally.
The term emerged during World War II as an alternative to "shell shock" from World War I, both reflecting attempts to describe combat's devastating mental toll.
Many veterans returned from the war suffering from battle fatigue.
