trench fever

Wartime bacterial infection

Trench fever is an infectious disease transmitted by body lice, causing recurring fevers, headaches, and severe leg pain.

The illness plagued soldiers in the trenches of World War I, where crowded, unsanitary conditions allowed lice to spread rapidly.

It rarely kills but can recur for years.
