vampyre

Nocturnal blood drinker

Vampyre is an archaic or deliberately antiquated spelling of vampire, the undead creature of folklore that rises from the grave to drink the blood of the living.

The spelling survives in gothic fiction, role-playing games, and subcultures that prefer its older, more romantic associations: The vampyre emerged from his coffin at midnight.

Some use it to distinguish a particular aesthetic or fictional tradition from mainstream vampire media.
