untacking

Pulling out basting

Untacking is removing tack—the saddle, bridle, and other gear—from a horse after riding.

The process reverses the preparation that got the horse ready for work: After the trail ride, the kids helped with untacking and brushing down the horses.

The term belongs to equestrian vocabulary, parallel to unsaddling but covering all equipment.
