understructure

Base beneath something

An understructure is the foundation or supporting framework beneath something—the base on which a larger structure rests.

Buildings have understructures of concrete and steel; bridges have understructures of piers and abutments.

The word also works figuratively: The understructure of her argument was shaky at best.

Compare infrastructure, which emphasizes systems rather than physical support.
