ujamaa
Familyhood in Swahili
Ujamaa is a Swahili word meaning "familyhood" or "extended family," adopted as the name for Tanzania's socialist policy under President Julius Nyerere in the 1960s and 1970s.
The system emphasized collective agriculture, self-reliance, and communal living in planned villages.
Ujamaa is also one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa, representing cooperative economics: The fourth day of Kwanzaa celebrates ujamaa.
