typewriting

Mechanical text production

Typewriting is the act or process of producing text using a typewriter—a mechanical or electric device with keys that strike inked ribbon against paper.

The term also covers the skill itself: She learned typewriting in secretarial school.

Typewriting has largely been displaced by typing on computers, though the words remain interchangeable for keyboard use.
