calyces

Sepals grouped together

Calyces is the plural of calyx, the outer whorl of sepals that encloses and protects a flower bud before it opens.

In anatomy, a calyx is a cup-shaped cavity or structure, particularly in the kidney where urine collects before passing to the ureter: The renal calyces were clearly visible on the scan.

The alternate plural calyxes is also standard.
