eft

Terrestrial juvenile salamander

An eft is a newt, especially in its juvenile terrestrial stage before returning to water as an adult.

The word is now rare outside naturalist contexts, where it typically refers to the bright orange land-dwelling phase of the red-spotted newt: We found an eft under a rotting log.
