triptychs

Three-paneled altarpieces

Triptychs is the plural of triptych, a work of art in three panels or sections, typically hinged so the outer panels can fold over the center.

The form originated in religious painting, with altar pieces that could be opened for services and closed for protection.

The term now applies to any three-part artistic composition: a photographic triptych, a triptych of novels exploring the same family.
