transliterated

Letters changed over

Transliterated describes text that has been converted from one writing system to another, letter by letter or sound by sound, rather than translated for meaning.

Russian "Москва" transliterated becomes "Moskva." The process makes foreign scripts readable to those unfamiliar with them: The transliterated Arabic helped students pronounce the words even if they couldn't read the original.
