enby

Beyond the binary

Enby is a phonetic spelling of NB, short for nonbinary—a person whose gender identity falls outside the male/female binary.

The term emerged from online communities as a noun parallel to boy and girl: I'm not a guy or a girl, I'm an enby.

Some nonbinary people embrace the label; others find it too cutesy or infantilizing.
