deadweight tonnage
Ship's carrying capacity
Deadweight tonnage is the total weight a ship can carry, including cargo, fuel, crew, passengers, provisions, and freshwater.
It represents the difference between a vessel's loaded and empty displacement—essentially everything aboard that isn't the ship itself.
The measure is standard in maritime shipping for describing cargo capacity: a tanker with 300,000 deadweight tons.
