bill of lading

Cargo receipt paper

A bill of lading is a legal document issued by a carrier to a shipper, detailing the type, quantity, and destination of goods being transported.

It serves three functions: as a receipt confirming the carrier has received the cargo, as a contract for transportation services, and as a document of title that can transfer ownership of the goods.

The freight company issued a bill of lading when the containers were loaded onto the ship.
