gross tonnage
Vessel's internal volume
Gross tonnage is a measure of a ship's total enclosed internal volume, used for registration, port fees, and safety regulations.
Despite the name, it measures space rather than weight—one gross ton equals 100 cubic feet.
The cruise ship's gross tonnage determines how much it pays in canal transit fees.
Not to be confused with displacement, which measures actual weight.
