enormity

Vast moral outrage

Enormity traditionally refers to extreme wickedness or moral outrage, not merely large size: the enormity of the crime shocked even seasoned detectives.

However, enormity is now widely used to mean immense scale or magnitude, especially of problems or tasks: the enormity of the refugee crisis.

Purists object to this second sense, preferring enormousness for sheer size, but the usage is well established.

Context usually clarifies whether moral weight or scale is intended.
