connection refused

Connection refused is a network error message indicating that a computer attempted to connect to another system, but the target actively rejected the request.

This typically happens when no service is listening on the specified port, a firewall blocks the connection, or the server isn't running: I keep getting connection refused when I try to SSH in.

Unlike a timeout, which suggests the request never arrived, connection refused means the target received and explicitly declined it.
