threshing floor

Harvest processing surface

A threshing floor is a hard, flat surface—traditionally packed earth or stone—where harvested grain is separated from its stalks and husks.

Farmers spread the cut grain and beat it or had animals trample it, then tossed the mixture so wind could blow away the lighter chaff.

The term appears frequently in biblical texts and historical accounts of agriculture.
