thought criminals

Minds deemed dangerous

People accused of holding beliefs or opinions deemed unacceptable by those in power.

The term comes from George Orwell's *1984*, where the totalitarian state punishes citizens for unauthorized thoughts.

It's now used to criticize perceived overreach in policing ideas: In their view, anyone who questions the narrative becomes a thought criminal.

Often deployed sarcastically by those who feel unfairly labeled for their views.
