Ministry of Love
Dystopian interrogation bureau
The Ministry of Love is a government department in George Orwell's novel *Nineteen Eighty-Four*, responsible for torture, interrogation, and enforcing loyalty to the totalitarian state.
The name exemplifies Orwellian doublespeak—calling the agency of terror "Love." The term now serves as shorthand for any organization whose benign name masks sinister purposes: The regime's "Department of Public Welfare" was their own Ministry of Love.
