test flight
Maiden aerial trial
A test flight is a flight conducted to evaluate an aircraft's performance, safety, or systems before regular operation.
New aircraft designs undergo extensive test flights, as do planes after major repairs or modifications.
The verb phrase test-fly describes conducting such flights: Engineers test-flew the prototype for six months before certification.
