trialing

Giving a tryout

Trialing is the present participle of trial used as a verb, meaning to test or evaluate something through a trial period: We're trialing a new software system.

The usage is more common in British English than American, where "testing" or "trying out" often substitute.

It also appears in dog sports, where handlers trial their dogs in competitions.
