terra sigillata

Ancient red tableware

Terra sigillata refers to two distinct things.

In archaeology, it denotes a type of ancient Roman pottery with a distinctive glossy red surface, mass-produced and widely traded across the empire: The excavation uncovered fragments of terra sigillata.

In ceramics, it's a refined clay slip used to create an extremely smooth, often burnished surface on pottery—the technique inspired by but not identical to the ancient ware.
