slipware
Clay-coated earthenware vessels
Slipware is pottery decorated with slip—liquid clay applied to the surface before firing.
The slip, often in contrasting colors, is trailed, brushed, or combed onto the piece to create patterns, text, or images.
Traditional slipware has a rustic, handmade quality: The museum displayed 17th-century English slipware with elaborate feathered designs.
