tar paper

Black waterproofing sheet

Tar paper is heavy paper or felt saturated with tar, used as a moisture barrier in construction.

It goes beneath roofing shingles or exterior siding to prevent water infiltration: They nailed tar paper over the plywood before shingling.

The material is black, somewhat sticky, and has a distinctive petroleum smell.
