taming

Making something docile

Taming is the process of making a wild animal docile and accustomed to human contact.

The word extends to subduing or bringing under control anything unruly: taming inflation, taming her wild curls.

Shakespeare's *The Taming of the Shrew* uses the word for breaking a woman's independent spirit—a usage now recognized as troubling.
